This morning, I headed to the USCIS field office in Minneapolis for another immigration interpretation assignment, a marriage-based Adjustment of Status interview for a Thai-speaking applicant.

Before every session, I remind myself that these interviews are not just about language or paperwork. They are about people, families, and futures. My client today was understandably nervous. Sitting in front of an immigration officer while your entire future in the United States is being discussed can be overwhelming, especially when English is not your first language.

As part of my preparation, I translated Form G-1256 (Declaration for Interpreted USCIS Interview) into Thai. This step helps ensure that Limited English Proficient (LEP) clients understand what they are signing and what their rights are. During the interview, I also provided sight translation, reading and interpreting written English documents aloud in Thai, so every question and detail was fully understood.

Before the session began, I conducted a brief orientation for the couple to explain interpreter protocols. I always clarify that my role is to interpret everything said, exactly as it is spoken, without adding, omitting, or changing meaning. This short explanation helps set expectations and makes communication flow more naturally.

One moment stood out during the interview. The applicant became flustered when asked about specific dates, which often happens when someone is anxious. Instead of simplifying or adjusting their words, I stayed true to my professional responsibility: to interpret faithfully, including pauses, hesitations, and incomplete thoughts. This preserves the integrity of the interaction and allows the officer to assess responses naturally.

By the end of the session, I could see a sense of relief on both clients’ faces. It was a reminder that interpreters play a vital role in ensuring that everyone, regardless of their English ability, has equal access to understanding and fairness in the immigration process.

I am grateful to The Language Doctors for the opportunity to serve. Every assignment reinforces the importance of professional interpreting and the impact it has on people’s lives during life-changing moments.
